Imerys Fused Minerals offers a wide range of Special Sands for the production of cores and moulds based on Fused Mullite, Fused Alumina and dense Alumina bubbles. These minerals are characterized by high refractoriness and low thermal expansion and are particularly indicated to prevent foundry defects such as finning/veining or sand burning. The wide range of special sands allows Imerys Fused Minerals to offer an appropriate solution for all binding systems including Cold-box, Furan, Shell moulding/ Croning and most of all common foundry technologies.

The high thermal stability makes Fused Aluminum Oxide and Fused Mullite the ideal moulding materials for the casting of reactive alloys and steels at very high temperature.

Imerys Fused Minerals works in close co-operation with the Imerys R&D center for Abrasives and Refractories (C.A.R.R.D.).

C.A.R.R.D. technical team draws on its knowledge of mineral structures and engineers them to deliver the properties required by the foundry processes. Jointly designing of new mineral solutions for existing applications and developing new products are core activities. Located in the site of Villach (Austria), CARRD utilizes the most advanced equipment for the characterization of the Thermal and Mechanical properties of mineral products, from room temperature up to 2000°C.

Fused aluminum oxides TREIBACHER ALODUR® WSK, SWSK, ZWSK, KKD are synthetic hard minerals based on alpha - aluminum oxide. They are produced in electric arc furnaces by electro thermal fusion at temperatures around 2000°C.

TREIBACHER ALODUR® WSK, SWSK, ZWSK, KKD show a value of 9 on the Mohs scale, placing them virtually in the same category as - and close to - diamond (Mohs 10), the hardest known substance.

Based on the very high hardness, the excellent thermal and chemical stability and a high degree of thermal shock resistance, fused aluminum oxide grits are mainly used for the production of refractory materials. It is used in sand castings as special sand, designed for the use at high temperature alloys, steel and iron castings.

Imerys Fused Minerals is able to offer a wide range of fused aluminum oxide based products, sized in straight grits or splits, according to current FEPA, ANSI, JIS or AFS standards for sand casting applications.

Therefore Imerys Fused Minerals is in the position to provide the proper refractory grain type for sand casting applications.
